40 for 40

For once I am not writing about disappearing off to an unknown location or trying not to fall into a crevasse. This is about a collection of eccentric challenges to mark 40 eccentric years of being on this earth. I may not complete them all, but I am going to try. Some things I'm doing for the first time and some things I'm going to be doing all over again this year, just to prove to myself that I still can. Others are to try and get to a better place at 40 than I was in the previous 39 years. We'll see how that goes throughout the year. I'll be writing about my progress towards each of these and you can find the posts at the links below for each of the items on my 40 for 40 list.


  1. Complete a triathlon

  2. Publish a book

  3. Do a handstand

  4. Finish a 10k+ puzzle

  5. Beat all the (main) Zelda games (It's Zelda's 40th anniversary this year!)

  6. Make a croquembouche

  7. Make a full dinner set

  8. Make an alchemy jug

  9. Get an italian greyhound tattoo

  10. Finish watching all the National Film Registry movies produced since 1986

  11. Donate blood

  12. Host a sleepover

  13. Create a piece of street art

  14. Learn to pick a lock

  15. Try therapy

  16. Make my own pasta

  17. Memorize a monologue

  18. Make a blanket fort

  19. Make cherry bounce

  20. Learn to (snow) ski

  21. Run a marathon

  22. Learn a song on my (bagpipe) chanter

  23. Take a self defense class

  24. Go to drag brunch/party

  25. Learn glassblowing

  26. Go to a drive in movie

  27. Write a letter to my future self

  28. Cook a five course meal

  29. Paint a mural

  30. Make a self portrait

  40. Write a letter to someone who hurt me and burn it
