Austenland

If you guessed that I was going somewhere crazy and adventurous, you are unfortunately wrong my friends. I am going on a pilgrimage to the birthplace of the modern romantic novel. Off to see where Jane wrote about Lizzie and Anne, and to walk through the estates that inspired beloved stories of independent-minded women finding their perfect match (*dramatic sigh*).

I'm starting off in London, traveling southwest through Winchester and on to Lyme Regis, and then heading north through Bath on the way to Stoke-on-Trent (of COURSE there will also be pottery on this trip!), and the peak district. Finally, I'll head back south to Windsor before flying home. I will be driving again. On the wrong side of the car. On the wrong side of the road. Look out Brits!

If you want to visit the scenery with me, take a look at these adaptations (absolutely in a particular order).

  1. Persuasion (1995) - Favorite Austen novel. Favorite adaptation.

  2. Pride and Prejudice (2005) - Keira Knightly is the perfect Lizzie. Come at me.

  3. Pride and Prejudice (1995) (TV Series) - Colin. Firth. It is worth the time.

  4. Sense and Sensibility (1995) - Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Hugh Laurie. If you haven't watched this yet, straight to the top of the list.

  5. Mansfield Park (1999) - Not very accurate, but I love it anyway.

  6. Sense and Sensibility (2005) (TV Series) - Lovely adaptation with beautiful scenery

  7. Emma. (2020) - All of the bonus points for spectacular costume design on this one.

  8. Death Comes to Pemberley (2013) (NOT Jane Austen's work - but definitely worth a watch)

  9. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016) (Oddly enough this is pretty close to the original story - with zombies. Good for watching with partners who are not into Austen...(yet??))

  10. Emma (1996) - Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma. If you liked reading Emma, this is...watchable?

I'll be updating the blog as I go so that I don't pester everyone with Facebook posts the entire trip, so feel free to check back here if you want to see what I'm up to as I'm adventuring.
